Jīnshānlǐng Great wall

Jinshanling Great wall is located in Luanping county, Chengde city, Hebei province, and borders on Miyun county of Beijing Municipality. It is 130km away from Beijing, 80km away from Chengde Mountain Roster, and 280km away from Mulan Paddock and Bashang Grassland. Both Jingcheng(Beijing-Chengde)Highway and the National Highway 101 run across the scenic area, Jinshanling Great Wall was built during the period(1567-1582)when Qi Jiguang, a famous patriotic general in Ming Dynasty, acted as the head of military force in Ji township.

As one of the representative sections of the Great Wall, Jinshanling Great Wall is typical in structure and is famous for its broad field of vision, dense guard towers, unique landscape, elegant architecture, complete military defense system and excellent state of preservation. It is an exemplary section of the Great Wall and hence comes the saying “Jinshan section is the most quintessential of the 10000-li Great Wall”. Starting from Longyukou in the west and ending at the Wangjinglou Tower in the east, the Wall stretches about 10.5 km. It includes five passes, 67 guard towers and three beacon towers. It was listed as one of the world cultural heritage sites in 1987 and was put down on the list of the important historical sites to be given special protection. It is also a National Scenic Spot and is one of the AAAA-grade national tourist attractions.

The Jīnshānlǐng section of the Great Wall is a completely restored stretch, but it's so far from Běijīng that it sees far fewer tourists than other fully restored sections. It contains some unusual features such as Barrier Walls (walls within the Wall), and each watchtower comes with an inscription, in English, detailing the historic significance of that part of the Wall. The landscape here can be drier and starker than at, say, Jiànkǒu or even nearby Gǔběikǒu, but it's arguably more powerful, and it leaves you in no doubt that this is remote territory.

Hiking (in either direction) on the restored section of the Wall here is straightforward. There's an east gate and a west gate (about 2km apart), which means you can do a round trip (120 minutes) without backtracking; from the east gate, turn right at the Wall to find the west gate, then right again once back down on the road. If you need it, there’s a cable car by the west gate ticket office.
